In 1984, a young student, the victim of a serious accident, coincides with a Cambodian survivor of the time of the Khmer Rouge in a clinic in the south of France. They are determined to defy the most pessimistic predictions and do their best to help each other. They fight to overcome, in a battle full of bravery and also compassion, which takes us from Montpellier to New York, from Phnom Penh to Jaipur, and later on to Barcelona; a struggle that is a lesson in hope and throws light on the surprising capacity of human beings to survive and face up to extreme adversity.
“The Jaipur Foot is the adventure of people who are the very symbol of the value of life, precisely because they find themselves in the situation they are in. People who confess, like the physicist Steven Hawking to a character in the book, that they would not have got where they are if it had not been for their illness. How to remain impassive in the face of such testimony? During my research I realized that the characters in The Jaipur Foot light up our existence like a beacon in the dark sea. They represent bravery and hope; they are a symbol of the passion for life.”
